Last July, I had my first colonoscopy at the age of 26. I was suffering from dysregularity, frequent diarrhea, and cramping. At the time, the diagnosis was post-infection irritable bowel syndrome caused by some form of infectious colitis.

Unfortunately, over the course of the following year, my symptoms gradually intensified and eventually became largely unresponsive to lifestyle-change-based treatment. It's gotten to the point that, for the past two months, I've been having to rely on max dose immodium to maintaining a semblance of normality in the bathroom.

Thinking that perhaps he had misdiagnosed ulcerative colitis, my gastroenterologist prescribed a course of budesonide. Sadly, it was completely ineffectual. As such, I was scheduled for yet another colonoscopy.

A few days ago, on June 20th, less than a year after my first one, I had the second colonoscopy of my life. Many more biopsies were taken this time. I haven't yet gotten the results. Frankly, I'm terrified of what they might find.

To add insult to injury, my insurance has a massive deductible, so I'm on the hook financially for pretty much the entire procedure.

I don't yet know what the total cost will be. Last time, it was about five thousand dollars. With all the extra biopsies this time, it might be a bit more, but I won't know what the pathology bill is for a while.

I've been running a fundraising campaign on other sites since June 11th and have managed to raise a decent amount of money.

Unfortunately, donations seem to have stalled at $2,987.18, a little over $2,000 short of our $5,000 goal.

On this day two years ago, the people we loved and trusted more than anything who promised to take care of us for the rest of our life threw us out on the streets to die and we, a transgender uterus-haver with untreated cancer, have been rejected for all benefits and aid by the state of Texas. We were already dying a slow agonizing death between starvation and no medical care. Now our cat is SUFFERING AND DYING, too-- and he is the literal only reason we're still alive. So imagine where we are at right now, mentally.

December 11, 2024 update: People gave up on our cat so he couldn't be seen and now all we can do is keep him comfortable unless people decide to care again enough to fund his imaging. We don't have income, we don't have benefits, we have been rejected for care credit. We can't even afford to feed ourselves and friends pay for his cat food. If you don't donate, he won't be seen. He currently doesn't have a job and we're out of unemployment. On top of that, my Grandma, who we live with, is making him pay weekly rent on top of all the other bills he has to pay. Aside from the major narratives from the last election cycle—such as immigration, abortion rights, trans rights, and the Israel-Gaza conflict—one significant distraction that captured public attention was the price of eggs. So, let’s crack a few and delve into this issue.

Over a 20-year period, from 2005 to 2024, the average cost of a dozen eggs in the U.S. was:

2005 - $1.22                     2006 - $1.31                     2007 - $1.68

2008 - $1.99                    2009 - $1.66                     2010 - $1.66

2011 - $1.77                      2012 - $1.84                      2013 - $1.91

2014 - $2.02                     2015 - $2.47                     2016 - $1.68

Have eggs increased in price? Without a doubt. But how much have they really increased? If you compare 2005 to 2024, the price has risen by $2.15, or 176.2%. Inflation! Well, yes and no. A detailed examination of current versus cumulative inflation rates, wage stagnation, and other related topics is beyond the scope of this dissertation.

So, let’s look at what you’re paying now in 2024 compared to 2005. Adjusted for inflation, $1.22 per dozen in 2005 is equivalent to $2.64 in 2024. At $3.37 per dozen now, that breaks down to $0.06 more per egg now compared to then. That morning breakfast of two eggs (though one is enough) is costing you $0.12 more over 2005 prices, or a total of $0.56, which still seems like a bargain. But while these figures don’t follow a straight path of inflation as many other factors calculate into this (e.g., production numbers, labor costs, weather, etc.), the overwhelming reason you’re paying more is greed. I wish I could say “plain-and-simple” greed, but that term does not give it justice. As for this particular and far-reaching subject, we’ll save that for another day.

Inflation will always play a part in what we pay for everything, but to blame it all on “Bidenomics Inflation” (inflation rate 2017 of 2.1% vs. 2.6% currently) falls short of the true story. The populace, easily distracted and believing facts to be "fake news," accepted the entire false narrative of rampant inflation, selling out our democracy. For the price of an egg.
